The Colorado Blues Baseball Club was formed in 2006. When age caught up with ten members of the Colorado Yankees, they decided to move up to the over-45 age division. Steve "Doc" Carter, Art "Spud" Kendrick, Jimmy "J Dog" Lococo, Erik "Big E" Palmer, Andre "Dre" Price, Les "Chief" Thomas, Larry Houle, Steve Vincze, Greg Wayman, and Brad Zisch all made the move. To fill out the team league all-stars, pitcher "Pistol” Pete Slaktowicz, Vinny Olan, and Larry Merfeld were added.
The team was lucky to pick up some players new to the league but not to baseball: Former professional players Jeff Schugel, Dave Lottsfeldt, Chuck Hensley, and Tad Powers. Catcher Bruce Brue and Dave Gold joined us in our 3rd season, Dr. Ron Thomas joined us in our 4th season, and more recent acquisitions include former league MVPs Frank "Sarge" Harmon and Tom Copeland, and longtime ace John Damsma. Pitcher Jeff Martinez, and league all stars Dan Cornejo, Andrew Romero, Kirk Johnson, Adrian "A-Train" Carter, and the Medina brothers (Lando and Daniel) have signed on, starting what the Blues hope will be a long-term association. Some of the Blues are no longer on the roster: Vincze, Wayman, Zisch, and Merfeld have retired, and Hensley, Lottsfeldt, and Powers have moved away (although Hensley and Lottsfeldt still Join the team for national tournaments).
Now in their 19th season, Blues players have enjoyed many hours of camaraderie and fellowship on and off the field. The team has been successful as well: league championships in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2015, 2017 & 2022; runner-up in 2011, 2013, 2016 & 2018 and great performances in national tournaments including four semifinal appearances with victories over several former champions along the way. The Blues won the 2022 NABA 50/60 Naqtional Championship Tournament in Las Vegas, NV, for their first national title.
The combined years of baseball experience that the Blues have is impressive and the number keeps growing. With over-60 and over-70 leagues in existence, the team will be able to compete and enjoy the game for many years to come.
